Belgian Waffles

The waffle is a batter or dough cooked between two patterned plates that give it its shape, eaten around the world; Belgium has over a dozen regional varieties. It descends from the 'oublie', thin cakes baked between iron moulds in medieval Europe, and the modern form appears in 16th-century paintings, including works by Bruegel. The word 'waffle' first appears in English in 1725.
