Grilled Safi (Rabbitfish)

Safi is a well-known Gulf fish, called rabbitfish in English, and Emiratis enjoy it grilled or in a stir-cooked rice dish called mahmar. It should be cleaned carefully before cooking, since its spines can hurt the hand if handled carelessly.

Ingredients for Grilled Safi

Method

  1. Rinse the safi well, remove any blood and the black membrane inside the belly, dry it and make deep slashes on both sides.
  2. Mix the salt, turmeric, cumin, coriander, garlic, lemon and oil, and rub it over the fish inside and out.
  3. Stuff the belly with the onion, coriander and lemon slices and leave for 30 to 45 minutes.
  4. Grill over medium charcoal or in a 220°C oven for 10 to 12 minutes per side, brushing with a little oil so it does not dry out.
  5. Serve hot with rice, daqoos and lemon.
