Luqaimat with Honey (sweet dumplings)

Luqaimat with honey is the other face of Emirati luqaimat, and similar fried dough balls are known across the Gulf and the Levant under names like lokmet el-qadi and awwamat. Sesame is sprinkled on top in many homes.

Ingredients for Luqaimat with Honey

Method

  1. Mix the yeast with a teaspoon of the sugar and a little warm water and leave 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Combine the flour, sugar, cardamom, saffron and salt, then add the yeast, rose water and water gradually and beat to a thick, sticky, pourable batter (thicker than pancake batter).
  3. Cover and leave in a warm place for an hour until doubled with bubbles.
  4. Heat the oil to medium heat (about 170°C). Test with a drop of batter; if it browns too fast, lower the heat.
  5. With a wet spoon or your fingers drop small balls into the oil (about 10 per batch), turning constantly until evenly golden.
  6. Lift out and drain on paper towels.
  7. Arrange the luqaimat in a bowl, drizzle with warm honey, sprinkle with sesame and serve hot.
